Review :

The writing and dialogue is atrocious. And despite a superb performance from Healy, it's very disappointing

"Nowhere to run. Nothing to lose."

In this brutal urban drama, 18 year-old Neal gets released from Mount Joy prison after spending over a year behind bars for drug dealing. He's had a hard time of if inside, and hours before he was even released, he was involved in a brutal fight with a drug addict in the shower room. He goes to his girlfriend's apartment to see his baby boy who he hasn't seen yet, and when she doesn't let him in, he attempts to break the door down and she calls the Guards. Neal's not even out half an hour and already it looks like he could be going back in, and then when he robs a mobile phone, he only makes things worse. He rejoins his gang of horse-loving misfits and thugs and after running into and killing the drug dealer who ratted Neal out, the gang goes into hiding in the Wicklow mountains where they'll confront the situation, and themselves, head-on... As much as I liked this film the first time I seen it, I knew it wasn't perfect. I watched it again the other night and found it almost impossible to sit through. If this had had a better writer and director working for it, then it would have been a superb film. But the writing is atrocious, and the camera work as well as everything else is diabolical and shaky. The only good thing going for it is Darren Healy's superb performance as Neal. The dialogue is wicked... absolutely terrible. Half of it makes no sense, and I know what I'm talking about as I'm Irish myself and have grown up in an area about forty minutes away from Dublin City and although it is at times a realistic portrayal of how people talk, it still doesn't need to bore and frustrate us when we are watching it. Most of the time it's just ridiculous, and there's no way anyone would come out with things like what these characters come out with. Most of the characters are really annoying too. Neal's buck-tooted best friend Liam was head wrecking, as well as the other fools who he rides around with. The writing is terrible, and I read somewhere that the screenplay was written by an America and an Irish man then helped put in the dialogue. Well it sure does show... because it's all clumsy and the editing is atrocious. Despite all this, there are some redeeming qualities, aside from Healy's performance, such as the locations and the horrible, grim atmosphere and some excellent scenes like when Neal confronts his father in the pub. Paul Tickell does an OK job, and there wasn't a whole lot he could do with the bad script that was handed to him. What would have made this so much better would be if Neal's friends were changed completely, some of the stupid, unnecessary scenes were chopped out of it (Such as the lesbian kiss and the woman raping the guy at gun point) and, last and most importantly, if the script was given a new, better and Irish writer from the area - like Roddy Doyle even - to re-write. Because other than that, the harshness and violence is all day and the pumping soundtrack. The ending is pretty crap, a horrible contrast to a brilliant, atmosphere setting opening. The title is derived from a speech made from Neal in the pub when he describes the North-Side Dubliners as the original breed and 'Crush Proof'. Despite a whole lot of potential, "Crush Proof" is a very poorly made film that is a shameful waste. I give it four stars because of what it tried to to... I feel that more films like this need to be made to portray the dark side of Irish society that the rest of the world doesn't seem too aware of.
